4 Types of Mobile Cranes and their Uses

If you’re into the construction business, chances are you need a crane, in addition to forklifts, tractors and other industrial equipment available for sale. Mobile cranes help lift, lower, and move heavy materials that people and other industrial equipment cannot. They are easy and less costly to move from one place to another when compared to non mobile cranes, as they’re mounted on movable platforms. Ascertaining the best mobile crane type that is optimal for your needs can be a little confusing, especially if you’ve never used one before. To help get you started, we list four crane types you can purchase at affordable prices at our salvage industrial equipment online auctions.

1. Truck Mounted Cranes

Truck mounted cranes offer the most mobility and don’t require any special equipment. They consist of two parts: a carrier or Lower and the lifter or Upper that includes the boom. The two components are attached with the help of a turntable, allowing the Upper to swing from side to side. Truck mounted cranes offer a lifting capacity of up to 1,300 short tons. High-end ones can rotate 360 degrees, making your lifting and transporting work easier in comparison to other mobile cranes types.

2. Crawler Crane

If you’re looking for a stable crane that requires minimal set up, a crawler crane is your best bet. The cranes are mounted on an undercarriage with caterpillar tracks, enabling them to safely traverse soft ground. Crawler cranes offer a lifting capacity of up to 3,500 short tons, which is almost triple that of rough terrain or all terrain cranes. The disadvantage is that moving a crawler crane from one job site to another can be expensive, as they are quite heavy.

3. Rough Terrain

Rough terrain cranes are similar to crawler cranes in the way that the engine powers the crane and the undercarriage. The difference is that rough terrain cranes have four rubber tires and all-wheel drive. Rough terrain cranes, as per their moniker, are designed for pick-and-carry operations on rough terrain. Equipped with outriggers to help stabilize hoisting, they are ideal for large construction projects such as bridge building, where you need a crane with high lifting capacity. No wonder they are in high demand in industrial equipment auctions.

4. All Terrain Crane

All terrain cranes combine features of truck-mounted and rough terrain cranes, to give you a machine good for both, on- and off-road mobility. Capable of lifting loads of up to 1,323 short tonnes, the cranes can travel up to 40 mph, enabling you to reach job sites faster than other types of cranes. All-terrain cranes usually have hydraulically operated winches and telescopic booms that can reach heights of 200 feet.

There’s More!

Mobile cranes consist of several other types, such as a side lifter crane that’s a semi-trailer and ideal for transporting standard containers. You also have a telescopic handler crane that you many use when installing frame trusses and lifting pallets of bricks.
